Botox: Not Just For Wrinkles

When many people think of botox, they think of the cosmetic uses of the product. While this is probably the most common use, there are other reasons for people to use it. In fact, your primary care physician may recommend trying it for a condition or problem you are having. Here are a few things botox can help with that are not related to wrinkles on your face.

Strabismus

Strabismus is an eye problem in which one eye is out of alignment. The affected eye may look up, down, or to one side while the other eye is focused on what you are looking at. Small doses of botox injections can help correct the alignment so both eyes are looking in the proper direction. It helps you to see and focus better.

Migraines

If you suffer from migraine headaches, you have probably tried several ways to stop the pain. Small doses of the botox toxin have been proven to not only reduce the pain during an attack but also reduce the number of headaches you get.

Excessive Sweating

Some people sweat a lot more than others, to the point of needing to change shirts throughout the day. This can occur even when the weather is cool or you are not exerting yourself physically. It can be quite embarrassing when you are trying to be professional or social. Botox injections can reduce this seating so you can lead a normal life without any worry.

Neck and Shoulder Pain

If you have shoulder or neck pain that keeps you from your normal activities or causes you to toss and turn to get a good night's sleep, botox may be the answer. As the toxin can freeze the muscles in the area, it will relieve pain. Being able to sleep well and enjoy your favorite activities will make you feel better in general.

While you can go to an esthetician or dermatologist to receive botox injections for wrinkles, you will need to see your primary care physician in order to get it for other reasons. If you are not sure, talk with your doctor and ask what they think. They can explain the benefits you will receive as well as how often you may need to receive the treatment and if there are any adverse side effects. Together, the two of you can decide the best course of action and make arrangements to start receiving the injections.
